The Depression hits. VS factory gates closed or closing; unemployed at job office line and sitting around idle. Shot symbolizing exclusion: MS from behind worker who watches as large iron gate closes in front of him. As economic situation worsens, both extremes of political spectrum grow more popular , promising great changes. The Nazis gain in strength, and so do the Communists, and street violence often breaks out between the two sides. streets

Anti-fascist signs; sign w/ pic of Lenin. GVs big march. Funny sign shows cartoon communist w/ moveable arm the keeps bopping a cartoon Nazi. MCU 2 boys w/ bandaged heads. LS speaker leads a cheering crowd, surrounded by flags, on platform decorated in the hammer & sickle theme. Bird's eye view Huge crowd! Speaker may be Thalmann but we don't get a real close look at him.
Early Auto Scenes
Master 1 - Tape 1 Automobile (1910s or earlier) comes down main street of Western small town. Backfires. Slapstick. Spectators line the streets. A man stands beside the auto, keeping pace, running along. Looks like a cliche comedy piece, but the turn-of-the-century crowds look authentic. Obviously a shot that introduces the automobile.

This film is especially of note in light of the events of 9/11/2001.
