"President McKinley and escort going to the Capitol. " prior to McKinley's inauguration; filmed at the junction of Pennsylvania Avenue and Fifteenth Street. " The film begins by showing mounted police troop, then American cavalry riding down street toward cam and turning off rt. Next come soldiers marching then various civilian dignitaries walk in the procession and come marching along the route then more cavalry. Accompanied by escort (Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio), horse-drawn carriages, the first containing President McKinley's party, come into view. Finally a brief shot of West Point cadets marching & executing left turn. Details from a contemporary Edison film company catalog (however the order of shots described here seems to be different from the footage we have; the film must be chopped up out of order): "The parade is headed by a platoon of mounted police; next comes the Grand Marshal, Major- General Francis V. Green, and staff, as follows: A. Noel Blakeman, Lieut. Col. John S. Johnson, Major-General N.E. Thompson, U.S.A., Brigadier-General U.S.W. Day, U.S.V., Lieut. Winfield S. Overton, U.S.A., all mounted on splendid horses. Next come the famous Troop A, of Cleveland, Ohio, who act as the personal escort of the President. They present a most striking appearance as they go down the incline on Fifteenth Street, Washington. Next comes President McKinley in his carriage drawn by four of his own horses, the pair of blacks in the lead and the favorite bays on the wheel. The President is seated in the right of the carriage with Senator Hanna on the left beside him, and facing them, with their backs to the driver, are seated Representatives Cannon and McRae. Owing to special permits granted us by the United States Government, we were able to have our camera within twenty feet of the President's carriage when it passed, and an absolutely perfect photograph was secured. The President's carriage is followed by Secretaries Hay and Gage. The third carriage contains Secretary Root, Attorney-General Griggs and the President's Private Secretary Cortelyou. The fourth carriage contains Secretaries Long, Wilson, Hitchcock and Postmaster-General Smith. The fifth carriage contains Lieutenant-General Miles and Admiral Dewey. We also present excellent pictures of the Admiral of the Navy and the General commanding the United States Army as they pass. This picture closes up by showing a detachment of Veterans of the Twenty-third Ohio Volunteers, followed closely by the West Point Cadets, who present a remarkable spectacle as they execute left wheel turning from Fifteenth Street into Pennsylvania Avenue.

Immigrants at Ellis Island, 1906. First we see people who have already gone through immigration and are now in front of building, in line to leave island. Then another group arrives carrying suitcases trunks bundles; a uniformed official directs them from the dock toward the Depot. There are people of various ages classes & European nationalities, carrying all sorts of baggage. An interesting little glimpse: In BG at left there are 2 young children, a boy and a girl, who seem to have hurried ahead on their own; they stand looking back toward the dock watching the line pass by; finally they go running back toward the dock, having spotted either their family or their luggage. We catch another glimpse of them in the line, now carrying baggage (the boy carries a heavy suitcase on his back and the girl holds a bag in her arms).
Peary Departs for Arctic. Explorer Robert Peary hosts an on-board party for his departure for the Arctic on the schooner "Roosevelt" The camera pans to show the schooner "Roosevelt", a new ship which was specially designed to withstand ice, docked at a covered pier on the Hudson River. From a camera position on board, men in straw hats and fashionably dressed ladies are seen boarding the ship. Next, the famous polar explorer Robert Peary appears on the gangway in a dark jacket, mustache and straw hat . He tips his hat, consults his watch, then, just before the film ends, motions to order the departure. (Guess he dropped these other folks off on the way!) This program is designed to influence children's appreciation for fine art. Hosted and narrated by Joan Kennedy, the program follows various groups of school children throughout the National Gallery of Art as they stroll up to different paintings and look at them. The manner in which they do this is, at times, clearly staged and mechanical. All works have the same premise for their composition; depict children in their daily lives. Kennedy has geared this program towards the elementary level. 13:17:11 Panning from a shot of the Capitol Building, footage shows groups of elementary age children moving down the stairs of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. 13:18:03 Three elementary aged children observing an oil painting. Their backs are straight, hair neatly combed. After looking at the first painting, they turn, and proceed mechanically to the next, and then the next. Each time they arrive with their hands folded and their heads cocked upright. One boy points as if to make a comment about the composition or use of paint. 13:18:31 opening Title: "Gallery of Children" 13:18:50 Family looking at painting. 13:19:07 A museum docent explains Edouard Manet's, "The Old Musician," to a group of school children. Program on the painter Gail Nalls, structured around footage of Nall's paintings and an interview with her. Good short segment of footage where a comet is shown traveling through space. 01:00:01 The program's precursor, "A WETA Miniature," appears set against the swirls of an abstract painting. Transitioning to another abstract painting and a bas- sculpture, the featured artist, Gayil Nalls, is shown in her studio. 01:00:35 "The programs title, "Gayil Nalls, Cycles," 01:01:07 Nalls' piece, "Adam and Eve: Life In Its Totality, ". It depicts a bleak representation of the Garden of Eden where the forbidden fruit tree has been transformed into a likeness of the devil. Adam and Eve have had their arms dismembered, and quiver as an approaching storm begins attacking their naked bodies.Nalls describes the piece. 01:01:36 Nalls continues her explanation over images of some of her work including two different sculptures depicting an exploded Statue of Liberty "The work is there not because the work is irrational or because it doesn't make sense. It is because it is the only to make sense of the world." 01:02:02 Vs of Nalls painting. 01:02:58 VS of Nalls at work on a painting intercut with a finished piece. 01:03:21 VS Nalls at work on a painting 01:03:53 The painting, "Flame Assassin In the Heart," shows a split canvas of color; used are red and orange. VS of other works as Nalls talks about them. 01:04:58 Images from space are shown. First, a representation of a large asteroid is shown as it spins through space. Second, a representation of a comet's surface; ice and vapor smolder of it. Then, a short clip of an actual comet in space is shown. Its' head is stark white and blurs into the blue of the tail. A painting Nall has made shows her impression of the connection humankind has with comets and space. 01:05:55 Nall continues with her discussion by describing the role and responsibility, she feels, artists should have.Shots of her at work in her studio. 01:06:04 Credits roll against the backdrop of one of Nall's paintings.

Interior N.Y. Subway, 14th St. to 42nd St., 1905, the first year of the subway's existence. Very good traveling shots of tunnel interiors and subway station platforms, subjective POV front of train following another train on the same track from 14th Street to 42nd Street. Nice endless repeating patterns of tunnel beams, of light and shadow. (The lighting is coming from another car travelling on a parallel track.) Stop and go travel, picking up and dropping off passengers at subway platforms. When we arrive at Grand Central Station there is a good view of men running toward the train, men and women and children getting off and walking along platform.
