U.S. Senator Al Gore (D-TN): "When you responded to the chairman a minute ago, you said there was no way you can tell, in fact some of the material has an album cover design which will indicate it, some does not. Is that correct?" Tipper Gore, Parents Music Research Center: "That's right. Some of the album covers are very explicit. In fact they look like they should be in Playboy or Penthouse, some of them. And they're in the record bins available to young children. But others, you can't tell. I bought the Purple Rain album for our 11 year old. And I didn't know that Darling Nicki was on it. And I felt that it was inappropriate for her and her 8 and 6 year old sisters to hear a song describing a girl masturbating in a hotel lobby with a magazine. I had no warning. In fact all I knew was the Prince was the new creative teen idol on the scene, and had just received a Grammy award."

Stanley Gortikov, President of the Recording Industry Association of America: "We will not rate the 25,000 new recorded songs we release each year as requested by the PMRC. We would not even know how, let alone trust appointed experts to do so. By who's standards would such ratings be determined? For what audience ages? For what religious, geographic, or societal backgrounds? For what degree of permissiveness or structure?" Chuck Ductoty, Program Director at WIYY-FM Baltimore: "The unconcerned parent is going to be unconcerned whether we put a label on the front of a record or not. If they don't care, they're not going to care."

And is it possible to restrict language in a democratic world? The Parents Music Resource Center seems to me to want a world that is uncomplicated, without pain for their children, not obscene, and not profane. But the hard real truth is that their children, our children, in their private lives, are meeting the very influences that we're trying to restrict." Tipper Gore, Parents Music Research Center: "What responsibility must your industry accept in a free society? We hope you will join us in addressing this issue with the seriousness that it deserves. And thank you very much." Adult, predominantly Caucasian, male and female audience applauds.

Again, there's a lot that they do that I applaud because they are taking responsibility as citizens. Now we can say that they're senators' wives and they're messing around in Washington, but they obviously have some real concerns. And they obviously have been listened to by a lot of people."

Let the government do it." Wait a minute, there's a picture of a devil on that one.' And check it out. I think no matter what they do, if they get away with this labeling junk or not, the parents are going to be in a situation where they're going to have to see what's going on if they're concerned. RedBeard states that if you don't like what you see or hear, turn it off. Nobody is forced to listen or watching anything, and that's why it's great to be an American.
