"This program documents the decade of 1957 to 1967, a time in which the Soviets picked up incredible speed in space exploration. In 1957, the Soviets shot an 83 kilogram artificial Earth satellite into orbit. Meeting with success, they sent three dogs into space and thus began the vigorous preparation for the first manned flight. Yuri Gagarin's historic trip into space on April 12, 1961, was followed by a 24-hour orbit in space, then a 4-day camp out. Then a woman astronaut's ascent. One interesting aspect of Soviet space exploration during this time is the incredible celebrity afforded to space travelers, equaled only by matinee idols and teenage rock stars in the U.S.
