INOUYE questioning Maurice STANS, former Finance Chairman of the NIXON campaign] INOUYE asks whether, as a close associate of Mitchell, Haldeman, etc, those men ever discussed plans for political espionage with STANS. STANS denies any discussion about planning the WATERGATE operation or the coverup. States he was completely uninformed, and that the Finance and Strategic arms of the CRP operated in "watertight compartments" and he had no say about how money was spent. None of his people knew about plans for Watergate, and he is glad that they didn't know. INOUYE asks when members of his "watertight compartment" were notified, since he was the head of the Finance Committee. STANS states that as far as he knew, no one from the Finance Committee was involved except for LIDDY, and that LIDDY, he understood, only came to the Finacne Committee because he had a feud with MAGRUDER and was transferred from the other side of CRP. And states "in fairness to Mr. Liddy," STANS thought he was a very good lawyer and that his outside activities were none of STANS' business. INOUYE states that he, like STANS, finds the circumstances regrettable, since INOUYE once worked with STANS as a member of the Senate Commerce Committee.
