ROBERTS-overview of debate in Mississippi State Legislature and in Washington. C/S Rep. TRENT LOTT (R-MS) debating in House, says he is not trying to be parochial about the issue, but people's concerns have not been addressed in deciding where to locate NUCLEAR (pronounced "nukeyular") WASTE facilities. Rep. JOHN BURTON (D-CA), challenges LOTT to support laws ending the PRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR WASTE. LOTT declines to support that approach. BURTON says LOTT likes NUCLEAR POWER as long as it's not in Mississippi.

C/S Rep. MARY ROSE OAKAR (D-OH), says that her reservation is about not trusting the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY to be honest about NUCLEAR WASTE. Rep. MO UDALL (D-AZ) who wrote the bill asks for trust in him personally. C/S Rep. ED MARKEY (D-MA) in office, says that the climate about NUCLEAR WASTE and the ENVIRONMENT has been improved by the election, so Congress should wait until the LAME DUCK session is over to consider a NUCLEAR WASTE BILL.

ROBERTS-looks likely that Congress will pass on voting on the bill in this session, but ENVIRONMENTALIST groups in 1983 may push for even more laws regulating NUCLEAR WASTE DISPOSAL and the waste caused by NUCLEAR WEAPONS TESTING. WERTHEIMER-Sen. TED KENNEDY has announced that he will not seek PRESIDENCY in 1984, after relatives at the Kennedy Compound over Thanksgiving urged him not to run.
