Senate Sergeant At Arms, Larry Smith, They re still going to be welcomed into the galleries. They re still going to be able to visit the rotunda, the old Senate chamber, the old Supreme Court chamber and the other historic rooms. So I think they re still going to feel very welcome. What we will not have any longer is just sort of a meandering or the wandering about the building without some supervision.

Senator Charles Mathias (R - Maryland), says that the idea is not to make the Capitol a fortress, but there must be a compromise between the public's right to access the government and the security of the government. We could lock all the doors. We could put a cord of police; make a fortress out of it. But it wasn t built for a fortress. It was built for a place of freedom of speech, from of access to government is not only permitted, but is guaranteed. We ve got a tough job now to find a compromise between that guarantee of free access to government and free speech and a reasonable level of security for this building and fro the men and women who work in it.

Paul Duke, Cokie Roberts, and Linda Wertheimer discuss the likely compromise between security and access, now seems to be falling on the side of security. Less ability to get close to Congressmen, visitors restricted mostly to parts of Capitol that are essentially museums. It is a loss that the public will be less able to access their elected officials.
