George McGovern (D - South Dakota) I don t have any name recognition problem or face recognition I m not sure what an advantage that is but my mug is pretty well know around the country. It s amazing to me driving down the streets in cities where people don't even know I m coming to town, it can be pitch dark outside and if they just catch a glance of the car I have people saying Hey, George, go to it. That s encouraging. Shot of McGovern and aide walking in snow, away from camera, towards cars, driving away in snow.

George McGovern (D - South Dakota) discussing the trauma of being stomped by NIXON in 1972, felt like a stranger in the Senate after campaigning for so long. I went through a period of about a year when I felt very odd in the Senate. I almost felt like a stranger. I had to get re-acquainted with my colleagues. I went back under conditions of an overwhelming defeat and I wondered if some of the Senators thought that maybe I had taken some of their friends down in defeat with me in close contest. The first year wasn t all that pleasant. Then I went back and plunged into a race for re-election to the Senate. I proved I could get re-elected. When I came back, maybe it s my imagination, but I thought they were welcoming me back to the club for the first time with open arms. I d proved my mettle again.

George McGovern (D - South Dakota) says being free of Senate duties helps. Just being free of those roll calls helps a lot. Now, I have to concede when I was in the Senate I missed a lot of roll calls, but I didn t miss any where my vote would have made the difference in the outcome of a particular vote. And what that meant is that frequently I d be someplace like Portland, Oregon and find myself flying all night to make a roll call vote in Washington and then be due back that night in Seattle.
