Thurman asking Carrie Jewel about how young pregnant girls were removed from sight. Carrie confirms that this was often practiced. Rep. Thurman then asks Carrie to describe how she was taught to commit suicide. Carrie states that how-to-suicide was never actually taught, but that through eavesdropping, she heard all about it. Rep. Thurman then asks Carrie why she thinks her testimony is important. Carrie states that she wanted the truth to be heard, and that it disturbs her that people are taking advantage of the suffering of others to make themselves look better. 16:04:18 Chairman McCollum thanks Carrie Jewel for her testimony, and then address Rep,. Schiff to begin his questioning. 16:04:26 Rep. Thurman begins his questioning by stating the Hearings are not meant to prove anything about David Koresh, but instead to determine if law enforcement agencies handled the situation with him properly. He also thanks Carrie Jewel for her testimony, and apologizes for the fact that she wasn't protected. 16:06:08 Rep. Schiff begins his questioning by asking Mr. McMahon about being an arms dealer in Waco, and his relationship to David Koresh. The questioning leads to discussion about how ATF agents' visit to Mr. McMahon gun shop. During the visit a call took place between Mr. McMahon and Koresh. McMahon states the agents' questioning prompted him to call Koresh. Koresh said he wanted to speak to the agents himself, but when he offered the phone to them, McMahon stated they refused the call. Rep. Schiff then reads the Arrest Warrant issued for David Koresh in which the wrong charge code was listed, and asks Mr. Goldstein to comment. Mr. Goldstein agrees the mistake exists. Fellow panelist, Mr. Duchamp, confirms the mistake. Then, Rep. Schiff asks Mr. Goldstein about the "no knock" entry made by law enforcement at the time of the raid. Thurman 16:19:24 Rep. Schumer begins his questioning by asking Mr. Goldstein to describe the type of military grade equipment used in the raid. Rep. Schumer then asks Lt. Barber about when his office became aware of problems at the BD compound. Mr. Barber states that suspicions arose from a report by the Immigration and Naturalization Office about the possibility illegal aliens may be on the property. Schumer than asks questions concerning events that lead up to the raid in 1993. Mr. Barber cites instances that caused suspicion in his office. They include neighbor complaints about possible automatic gunfire being heard and a UPS deliveryman telling them a package containing grenade casings. Other shipments were reported about chemicals being sent which would allow for the arming of the grenades, and it was then that the ATF called police. Schumer summarizes the questioning by stating that it was local law enforcement that called in the federal agencies. Mr. Schumer then asks Mr. Dushomp a series of questions concerning the validity of the Search Warrant. Mr. Duchamp agrees the warrant was valid. 16:35:55 Rep. Blute asks Mr. Thibideaux to describe what happened on the day of the raid; he was within the compound at the time. He details how there was suspicion about one of the under cover agents not being who they had claimed to be. He goes on to describe the helicopters, and the actions of BD members at the moment the raid began. He states, Koresh said, "Don't do anything stupid. We want to talk to these people. We want to work it out." His conclusion about gunfire was that it came from the helicopters and the ground troops simultaneously. 16:42:54 Rep. Scott asks Mr. Goldstein to describe the Exclusionary Rule. 16:48:17 Rep. Bryant addresses several clarifying questions to the various panelists. He discusses a Mr. Brow who was a BD member, Koresh's dealings at gun shows, the fact there were children within the Mount Carmel compound and that the element of surprise was lost. 16:53:30 Rep. Lofgren begins her line of questioning by asking Carrie Jewel if she knew about other girls at the compound who were being molested, and then if she knew of there being guns or explosives stored at the site. Carrie states she did know of other girls being molested and the presence of guns, but not explosives. Carrie goes on to describe a gun Koresh had shown her. Rep. Lofgren then asks Carrie what she told agents when her father took her in for questioning. Carrie states that it was mostly about the children. Rep. Lofgren then asks her about the possibility there were arranged marriages between BD members and illegal aliens. Carrie states there were several arranged marriages made to keep several BD members in the country. Rep. Lofgren then asks why Carrie why she felt things would end negatively; a reference to her earlier testimony. She elaborates by telling how everyone was kept in a state of readiness. Rep. Lofgren then asks if there was ever a reason given for the molestation. Carrie states that she was told King David would sleep with young virgins to keep him warm, and that Psalm 45 justified the molestation. 17:00:00 Chairman McCollum begins a line of questioning by asking Mr. Thibideaux how the fire began at the compound. Although he didn't know how the fire was stated, Mr. Thibideaux graphically describes the condition the building was in immediately prior to witnessing flames shooting through a hallway. 17:03:38 TAPE OUT.
