Color footage of the construction of Lake Point Tower in Chicago, Illinois, fall/winter, c. 1968 Heavy Machinery, bulldozers, sinking shafts, drilling, digging, pouring cement. Highlights include: Animated diagrams of building principles, building taking shape (to about 20th floor); nifty shot of work on top of building with late-60s Lake Shore Drive in distance. ( Note: Due to the way this footage was originally assembled, some segments contain short chunks of black leader in-between shots).
MS heavy construction machinery drilling up the ground. Looks like a hydraulic shaft with a huge drill attached at the end of it to drill out big sections of the ground. MS as cam pans up a huge concrete tube (sewerage?) as it is lifted by crane. Nice but short MS of crane operator and asst. in cab of crane, watching the action in front of them. Cab turns slowly. Crane operator puff on a cigarette while he maneuvers the crane. Two construction worker help guide a huge concrete tube (sewerage?) into place as it swings from the crane. Several more very short shots of construction workers guiding large structural pieces and machinery into place. These shots are intercut with a few seconds of black in between. Overcast light. One shot shows the old Navy Pier building with "North Pier Terminal" sign on it. CU pounding a piling into place, MCU worker guides drill into place, CU large twisting drill thing. CU drill cutting through muddy ground. MCU bulldozer pushing soggy, muddy dirt towards camera. MS construction worker in hard-hat with hand on a rope, looking down, guiding something out of frame. Underground, low angle POV as a bucket is lowered toward camera in a deep well. MS construction worker drilling (with huge drill) out parts of the wall of an underground tunnel - looks like the drainage system is going to go in here. Two workers are hoisted up out of the well (low angle pov). CU man drilling wall of underground tunnel. More MCU same. Low angle POV of bucket hoisted up out of well. MCU huge, strange looking machine with two large arms/blades that appear to cut the ground.
Pink and blue computer line drawing showing structural principles involved in the construction of Lake Point Tower. Shows the length and width of the structural supports underground. MS construction workers lowering metal frame underground. North Pier Terminal and old Kraft Building are in b/g (hazy, but there). Underground worker in hard hat attaches some kind of disc with a wire coming from it (some kind of sensor or explosive?) to the ground. CU pouring concrete over the disc with wire attached to it. MS overhead shot of worker in hard-hat attaching what looks like a stick of dynamite to a thick bundle of cables, as he is slowly hoisted up from the well. MS several construction workers guide a cement truck into position. North Pier Terminal in background. Workers wear hard-hats and rain gear. CU foot near some heavy machinery - looks like the back of the cement mixer truck. Computer line drawing, 3-dimensional view of support structure. MCU construction worked in coat and hard-hat. From out of frame, a hand grabs on his hat and turns it around - forcing him to look at the camera - he smiles. Overhead shot of construction workers pouring concrete down into support structure.
Overhead MS of construction worker guiding concrete bucket as it dumps concrete into the support structure. CU contractor type or foreman with a hard-hat with the company name 'CRANE" on it. In sunglasses and trench coat. Looks like he is being interviewed but there is no sound. Side view of a guy in a suit talking, nodding. MS two construction workers (wearing hard-hats and heavy boots) place large sheets of plywood. Sunny day, North Pier Terminal in background. WS scaffold tower/construction elevator shaft with some large object being hoisted up through its center to the top. CU inside the top of the scaffold, low angle POV as something is hoisted up to the top. WS construction workers pouring concrete - summer, sunny day (leafy trees in b/g, bright sun). Camera follows one guy who is pushing a wheel-barrow of something (cement?) across the site. Pool of wet cement seen through metal reinforcement frame (rebar?)
Nice WS of the lower levels of Lake Point Tower. Main skeletal structures in place, with temporary supports and framework. Cam tilts up to the top, which I about 13 stories high at this point. Nice sunny blue sky. Tilts back down a bit. Static on WS. WS from top of the building (which isn't more than 20 stories tall at this point). Construction materials and workers in view, lake in background. Safety railing along edge. Very nice MS of two construction workers (one wearing hard-hat) placing a metal reinforcement rod at the top of the building - which isn't over 20 stories tall at this point. Nice background with lake shore drive, apartment buildings along the gold coast looking north, and the lake. Cam pans as they place the bar. Sunny, slightly hazy light.
