John Thomas fails to win the high jump, dashing expectations. In the broad jump, Jesse Owens' 26-year old record is bested at last by Ralph Boston. In the hurdles Lee Calhoun butts the tape to take first place. Otis Davis wins the 400 meters despite a lunge a la Lee Calhoun by Carl Kaufman of Germany. Heroine of the Olympics in Wilma Rudolph of Tennessee, the only winner of three gold medals. Don Bragg sets a new record for the pole vault.
