Promo for The Porter Wagoner Show #224 featuring special guest Justin Tubb. Spot opens with entire cast singing "The World Needs A Washing." Camera pulls out to reveal orange Nudie suit-wearing Wagoner, who announces Justin Tubb and regulars and invites us to tune in. Fade out over art card with colorful illustration of Porter.
Opening of Porter Wagoner show #224. Standard pre-recorded opening begins with CU of Porter s shiny red boots walking down hallway, which cuts to rear view of Wagoner s garish green Nudie suit festooned with rhinestone wagon wheels and cacti. Montage of smiling Porter happily walking through WSM-TV studio as stage hands and technicians prep show. Don Howser s voice over reads: "Direct from Nashville Tennessee, here s The Porter Wagoner Show!" Quick shots of regulars as Howser announces them: "Starring Porter Wagoner, Dolly Parton, Mel Tillis, Speck Rhodes, Don Howser, The Wagonmasters, and today s special guest star." Momentary pause in VO (presumably left for Howser to read the guest star s name on air), then prerecorded segment ends with Howser s "...and now, here s Porter." Cut to live portion as Porter, wearing dazzling, rhinestone-studded tangerine Nudie suit, plays guitar and sings Red Foley's "Tennessee Saturday Night" backed by Wagonmasters Buck Trent, Don Warden, Mack Magaha, George McCormick, Jack Little and Speck Rhodes (though only Trent is seen in this segment, soloing on guitar and wearing a white western outfit with red shirt and blue tie).
Porter welcomes audience and introduces "stutterin' lad" Mel Tillis, commenting on how the folks with color TV sets are gonna love Mel's suit. Tillis wears a snazzy blood red suit and plays guitar and sings "If I Could Only Start Over" from his LP "Life's That Way," backed by The Wagonmasters and accompanied on harmony vocals by George McCormick. Medium close-ups of Mack and Buck's fiddle and banjo solos. Afterwards Porter returns and jokes about Mel's suit, then mentions that George's wife Anita just had a baby.
Mack Magaha fiddles us out of the commercial break on brief instrumental version of "Fire On The Mountain," backed by The Wagonmasters. Afterwards Porter recites part of a verse, laughing.
Porter introduces "Pretty Miss" Dolly Parton, who plays guitar and sings "I'm Doing This For Your Sake" from her "Fairest of Them All" LP, backed by The Wagonmasters.
Porter asks Dolly to introduce their guest, so Dolly welcomes "one of the singin'-est fellows you'll ever see anywhere, and I might add one of the best lookin' too," Justin Tubb. Backed by The Wagonmasters and wearing a smashing black and gold jacket, Tubb sings "Family Way."
Accompanied by The Wagonmasters, Porter plays guitar and sings a breezy medley of his hits "I'll Go Down Swinging," "I've Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand," and "Misery Loves Company."
Porter introduces gap-toothed hayseed comedian Speck Rhodes, who enters wearing his trademark red and yellow checkered suit and green bowler hat. Speck tells a couple corny jokes about his fictional girlfriend Sadie. "You can never tell how a girl's gonna turn out 'til the old folks turn in." Then backed by The Wagonmasters, Speck sings Little Jimmy Dickens' 1957 novelty hit "Sleeping' At The Foot Of The Bed."
Porter introduces sacred song time, then accompanied by The Wagonmasters plays guitar and sings "Someone To Care."
Porter reintroduces Justin Tubb, who mentions that he quit smoking and gained a lot of weight, though he sure don't look heavy. Then backed by The Wagonmasters, Tubb plays guitar and sings "Louisiana." Then Porter wraps up the show, waving goodbye as The Wagonmasters play the instrumental show outro, Don Howser signs off, the credits roll, and Mack fiddles and dances us off the air.
