Porter Wagoner Show #16 with special guest Carl Butler. Features numerous pitches and commercials for medicinal products including laxative and cold remedy products.
Introduction to Porter Wagoner Show #16. Via voice over, announcer T. Tommy Cutrer introduces sponsors over title cards illustrated with product artwork: Black-Draught laxative "that leaves you feeling fresh and clean inside," and Soltice Quick-Rub cold relief. Over title card, Cutrer introduces Porter Wagoner and the Wagonmasters, series regular Norma Jean, and their special guest star Carl Butler. Wagoner (wearing rhinestone-inlaid Nudie Cohen suit) and Wagonmasters Dan Warden and Benny Williams sing Black-Draught jingle. Cutrer enters and introduces Wagoner by saying "Here's the boy we're considering to replace Jack Paar." Wagoner plays guitar and sings "The Crawdad Song" accompanied by Norma Jean and Wagonmasters. Jean, Warden, Speck Rhodes, Benny Williams, and Cutrer (wearing a fake Mitch Miller beard) all take a turn at the mic. Rare clip in that all cast members take turn at mic (all getting CUs in the process).
Wagoner introduces Grand Ole Opry regular Carl Butler, who plays guitar and sings his first big hit, 1961's "Honky Tonkitis," accompanied by Wagonmasters. Fiddle solo by Benny Williams, steel guitar solo by Don Warden.
Wagoner and Cutrer sing Black-Draught's praises, followed by reprise of jingle featuring lively fiddle coda by Little Jack Little.
Wagoner introduces Norma Jean, saying she gets more mail than anyone else on the show. Jean plays guitar and sings "My Baby's Not Here Tonight" accompanied by Wagonmasters. CU Benny Williams guitar solos.
Accompanied by The Wagonmasters Wagoner plays guitar and sings "An Old Log Cabin For Sale," which he says was one of the first songs he ever learned.
Wagoner asks Cutrer to pass him the popcorn so he can watch "a real interestin' movie," namely a Black-Draught laxative commercial. Cartoon man walking along river experiences gastric distress, as represented by discolored blob in abdomen and sound of bassoon. Man sees words "Black-Draught" in water, jumps aboard as words act as motorboat representing relief. "A halfway laxative does a halfway job," the voice over informs us, further extolling virtues of product and describing the many forms product takes (powder, syrup, tablet). At end of commercial, man holds bouquet of flowers and jingle sings how Black-Draught helps you "feel fresh and clean inside." Wagoner returns and pitches product again.
Wagoner introduces Benny Williams, who plays a fast version of "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" on banjo. CU Williams' finger picking. At end of clip, Wagoner returns and vocally imitates banjo sound.
"Speaking of ding a-ling a-lings," Wagoner introduces gap-toothed comedian Speck Rhodes, who answers old-time crank telephone wearing his trademark checkered suit with bow tie and bowler hat. Talks with operator Sadie, then asks to talk with Greasy Miles at the filling station. Corny old-timey jokes about driving.
Wagoner turns things back over to Cutrer for Soltice Hi-Therm commercial. While watery organ music plays, animated man walks by small impish character who says "Hi, Mac!" Man replies: "Hi, Therm!" Announcer intones: "New! From the makers of Soltice! It's Hi-Therm, for fast temporary relief from the minor aches and pains of arthritis, rheumatism, and muscular soreness. Great clunky animation of hand applying Hi-Therm to knee, and graphic representation of throbbing pain and glowing relief. Product is touted as "pure, white, and greaseless, so it will never stain your clothes." Wagoner attests to Hi-Therm's healing qualities, claiming it healed a recent attack of "rheumatism, or something."
Wagoner plays guitar and sings Hank Williams' "Luke The Drifter" song "Be Careful Of Stones That You Throw," which he introduces as "The Bad Girl Down The Street."
Wagoner reintroduces Carl Butler, who talks about playing The Flame Club in Minneapolis. Butler plays guitar and sings "For The First Time," accompanied by The Wagonmasters. MS of Speck, Don, and Jack.
Wagoner and Wagonmasters wrap up show with Soltice jingle. End of show voice over reprises show's sponsors over shots of products, segues into short commercial for Cardui Tablets for women. "All modern girls know, to stay on the go, Cardui tablets are great!," then back to Cutrer's outro.
