Forty thousand 18-year old draftees gather out side Mexico Cities Great National Cathedral to take the Oath of Allegiance. Across the nation 200,000 youths are inducted simultaneously. This is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla in 1862 where Mexican forces defeated a French invasion army supporting a puppet emperor Maximillion. These inductees will serve for a full year. Making up fully half of Mexico's civilian armies. An occasion long familiar to American youths and their families becomes part of the national experience of our neighbors south of the Rio Grande.
