This film examines the use of exploratory missions by unmanned spacecrafts to find life on other planets, focusing on the Viking project exploring possible life on Mars. The miniature lab on board the Viking spacecraft is designed to search for the lowest common denominator of all living things, the cell. It seeks chemical information, looks for moist areas, which could sustain life, any evidence of photosynthesis, and especially microscopic life. These contemporary efforts to find life on other planets are discussed by Dr. Theo Hofman a biochemist at the University of Toronto, and Dr. Stephen Young, Chief of Planetary Biology at NASA.
