We also used to collect rainwater to do our laundry. In other words, shortage of freshwater has always been a pressing problem over there." In which there were all kind of predictions about how the world would go hungry & people would start killing each other for a glass of water or killing each other for a piece of bread. Although those predictions have not come through as they were expected, there is a problem & I became very aware then of how precious water is. For the first time I started thinking from where it comes & what it takes to bring the water to each person; what water means to agriculture & why there are places that are so well developed & others that are not. It depends mostly on the water. There are wars about a drop of water. All that I learned when I was working for FAO, but very few people have the privilege of learning that. So for me it was like a revelation, I have become all my life very aware of the resources."

Our pump could not pump enough & some of the water pumped was loaded w/ salt. That was the final blow: to use that kind of water for irrigation. The water has been diverted through Molina to Orihuela, but it actually does not reach there. They are in even worse shape then we are. The Segura is almost dry. The water companies use most of it, but some if it is used to irrigate farmland. The ones who get that water are the lucky ones. I'm not going to plant trees anymore. If I knew there was going to be enough water I would gladly use my land, but I'm not going to invest money & then be in the same situation. There are people looking for land on which to build houses, so maybe one day I will divide the land & sell the whole lot." We can bring the empty waterbags on deck, fill them up & tow them over to the other side. The first time we brought water over to Cyprus, we were received like heroes over there. They had no water. We were blowing the whistle, the President was pressing the button & the water came out. Was very nice. They are quite happy about it." They're disappointed, go into the shop & buy some lemonade. And I'm the shopkeeper!" Body Shop founder ANITA RODDICK says "The ownership is about economic ownership. It's not for the value of the community. It's about how a few people can be made richer.
