Master 3 - Tape 1 MS little girl with blode corkscrew curly hair, stands stick still for the camera and smiles. She's wearing some kind of quasi-hawaiian costume.CU her face - then she walks right into the camera (creepy!). MWS, fast-spinning merry-go-round. Spectators are gathered around its perimeter. A guy in a suit, fedora hat and a cigarette walks by quickly. Good carnival ambiance, establishing shot. MCU of small boys standing close to merry-go-round looking at it (cute and nostalgic). Kids and adults circle past on the horses that rise up and down.
Shot from railroad platform as the coffin is lifted out the window of train car and carried by ten sailors and soldiers serving as pallbearers. (NOTE RE MASTERS & TIME CODES: This shot ends rather abruptly at end of tape 1151 part 1, with TC at 01:12:03; the shot continues on 1151 part 2 , where TC backs up a few secs & starts running at 01:11:59 )
PART 2 The sailors carry away McKinley's coffin which is covered with a large U.S.flag and flowers. MLS pallbearers carrying the casket through a cordon of civilian dignitaries (Cabinet members?) who have removed their hats in respect. MS pallbearers pass with casket, followed by other military personnel. (and I think the new President Theodore Roosevelt may be among those in BG.) They lift the casket into the back of a waiting hearse.
But first some real footage of Auburn Prison sets the scene. As train goes by in FG, cam pans rt on the walls of the prison. Another shot from a higher elevation, pans slowly along the top of a prison building, and tops of trees in prison yard.
Re-enacted portion: Interior set of a stone wall with an iron barred door. Uniformed guards walk over and open the door and bring out a man in civilian clothes, leading him away; two of them hold onto his arms. The camera then dissolves to a set of the execution room in which a few civilian men stand looking at the electric chair. The prisoner is brought in and strapped to the chair. The 6 witnesses watch as he is supposedly electrocuted (the actor just tenses then relaxes his body three times). Then two of the six witnesses examine him with stethoscopes to see if he is dead.
LS The hearse which is to bear the President's body to its last resting place drives into view in front of McKinley home. The Cabinet members form lines on either side of the walk; the Admirals of the Navy and the Generals of the Army form lines in their rear. President Roosevelt takes his place at the head of the Cabinet. The coffin carried out of house by soldiers and sailors, passes through the lines of Diplomats, Admirals and Generals, all heads uncovered. Coffin is placed in the hearse, and it starts slowly away; President Roosevelt and his Cabinet walk toward their carriages. Pan with hearse driving away.
Pan with pallbearers (sailors and soldiers) carrying McKinley's coffin out of the church at Canton and placing it again in the hearse; the doors of the hearse are shut. The hearse finally starts away for the cemetery, followed by the famous Black Horse Cavalry, Troop A, of Ohio.
MS American Indians ride single file on horseback, moving toward & past the camera at a fast walk; they are wearing traditional costumes, feathers, war paint, and are carrying rifles
GV A fake battle between the Indians and men dressed as U.S. Army troops in battle regalia, held in the Stadium of the Pan-American Exhibition with large arches and columns around it. The soldiers attack first, rushing and firing at the Indians, who succeed in repulsing the attack. More soldiers enter the scene. Some of the mounted Indians gallop in a large circle around the soldiers, and around edge of field, swooshing past very near camera. Lots of LSs of "soldiers"some of whom are lying on the ground or kneeling as they fire their rifles, The "battle" continues; there's also a lot of smoke and the action is confusing to say the least but it makes it funny
Sham battle continues; more LSs of soldiers on knees firing into cloud of smoke in which one catches vague glimpses of the Indians. LS The soldiers enact some dramatic battlefield heroics and deaths; other individuals don't show such theatrical inclinations and can be seen calmly walking or standing about. The Indians make a great charge, succeeding in getting most of the way across the stadium (toward cam). A group of soldiers pop up in FG - -CU as they affix their bayonets, advance, all fire their weapons and then charge, chasing the Indians across the field. After this there's a bit with guys on horses and more guns firing but doesn't seem to be part of the battle. Then again the rest of it seemed almost as unfod Then all of the participants leave the field.
President William F. McKinley makes his last public speech at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, NY, where he would soon be shot. Pres and Mrs McKinley walk across the platform which has masses of patriotic decoration - flags, bunting, ribbons etc.- - and take seats in 1st row of chairs for VIPs on the platform. John G. Milburn, President of the Pan-American Exposition, introduces the incumbent president of the United States. Much applause, cheering, and hat waving by spectators as McKinley begins his speech. (In it he talked of trade and commerce, the merchant marine, necessity of building the Panama Canal. Of course this film is silent, but FOR TEXT OF SPEECH SEE NOTE.)
