Preview Cassette 220370 1972 CarAds 1) PAUL BURKE for the 1972 Buick Skylark 350. Standard pitch, set in the suburbs. While Paul sells, the milkman, the postman and the neighbors all gather round the ugly champagne colored car. 2) PAUL BURKE for the 1972 Buick Rivierra. MS of Paul in an industrial design studio, surrounded by drawings and clay sculptures of cars. Cut to nice outdoor product shot of the huge silver luxury car. 3) the 1972 Buick Skylark 350 Sun Coupe. Great aerial of the car speeding along a deserted beach, near sunset. Level LS's of the car stopping by the shore, the roof being taken off and the driver sticking his body through the hole to cast a fishing line into the ocean. If he's trying to catch crabs he'll do just fine, otherwise meet the dumbest fisherman ever. 4) 1972 Dodge Dart. Ah yes, the Dart. MS's and CU's of four teenagers (two boys, two girls) at a lake, pulling items of amusement from the car. Great product shots of the indescribable car, and some good CU's of the vinyl coupe sunroof. 5) Mercedes-Benz. LS's of a sedan being tested on a racing track. A wide variety of conditions are simulated: high winds, flooding, icy roads, rough or extreme roads, sudden braking, etc). Some great subjective shots as well, taken from car's INT, the Mercedes-Benz insiginia (hood ornament) center frame. Ends with product shot. 6) 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL. LS's of a six car "ballet", as six drivers test their mettle and six responsive cars on a test track. Some interesting and ultimately graceful moves here. 7) 1972 Mercedes-Benz Sedan. LS's and MS's of a MB sedan on a rather extreme test track. Some great subjective shots taken from INT car (cam mounted on hood, MB insignia/ hood ornament center frame) as car speeds on an empty road. 8) Mercedes-Benz. LS's of a rather extreme road test on a rural, winding, mountainous, treacherous Italian road. 9) Mercedes-Benz. Great CU's and MS's of skilled laborers in a Mercedes factory, handcrafting cars (smoothing, polishing, shaping, finishing, feeling). Making the cars the old fashioned, un-automated way. Giving cars the personal touch. Shining, bending, hammering, installing leather seats, etc. Industry, manufacturing, cars, automobiles, labor. 10) Oldsmobile. A diamond giveaway contest, either national or local. MS's of a gallant man in a castle library, donning the vestiges of the Three Musketeers (the regal sword, cape, gloves, feathery hat, and dignity) before leaving the castle for his Oldsmobile parked in the driveway. Good CU of a palmful of shimmering diamonds in his gloved fist. 11) Oldsmobile. Another ad for the diamond giveaway contest. CU's and MS's of a young blond betty sitting in the backseat of a parked Olds; she wears furs, leathers and diamonds... how nouveau riche, eh? She talks to the camera about the contest.

Great shots of Walter Winchell seated at desk with ABC microphone in front of him as he announces the winner of a contest who came up with a cancer fighting slogan "Arrest Cancer - It's Wanted for Muder." Winchell repeats it twice with his inimitiable fervor. Cuts to dark shot of people on street. Cuts back to Winchell who announces winner although audio cuts out as he is about to say her name. Picture cuts to the smiling, unidentified woman who came up with the slogan. Reel cuts to an unidentified hearing and a man giving a statement regarding US aid to european countries.

Doing Things For Ourselves In School
Another treasure for those dependent on cultural irony. Yeah, this is amusing in a kitschy way, being that it has not aged well at all, but it is truly signifigant in that it stresses the necessity of independence, and from such an early developmental age. Perhaps some background will help. This film follows a day in the life of adorable Steve (ne Stevie), a charmingly mature first grader living in an anonymous suburb. As the day progresses we learn that Steve enjoys doing things on his own, and if he doesn't know how to do something he opts for the joy of figuring it out himself. That's right, Steve's not your ordinary elementary cookie-cutout. Whether it be at home or in school, Steve is utterly independent. Oh, and one more thing, for one reason or another there are titles on the bottom of the screen relaying what the narrator is saying verbatim. Why? Beats this kid. Some shots within: MS and CU of Steve sitting on his bed and tying his shoes. MS of Steve feeding Chipper, his Dalmatian; MS of Chipper feasting. MS of Steve's mom giving him lunch money, CU of the three bits in her hand. MS's of Steve cautiously walking to school, looking every which way as he crosses intersections. MS of Steve and two classmates standing curbside, waiting for a policeman to signal for them to cross the street. MS of Steve entering the classroom, going into the closet to take off his shoes; CU's of him struggling with the boots, but "feeling good about doing things himself". MS's of lil Steve serving himself in the school lunch line, paying for his meal. MS's of kids joyously entering the classroom again, donning smocks... it's art time! Great MS's of Steve and his dopey buddy trying to open a jar of paint, but can't; Joan offers to help by running the lid under warm water, then opening it (yeah, Joan! Girl Power!). MS's of kids painting, having fun, being independent. LS'sof kids leaving the school, paintings in hand.

Talks about how the American movie industry has come under fire from several angles, including the House Un-American Activities. Cites American paranoia about communism in the film industry and Russia's disdain for American film as capitalist propaganda as the greatest paradox. Goes on to denigrate and stereotype communist ideology and preach capitalist democracy with religious fervor.

Johnston's doublespeak is worth transcription: "We are accused of having Communists and Communist sympathizers in our employ. Undoubtedly there are such persons in Hollywood as you will find elsewhere in America. But we neither shield nor defend them. We want them exposed. We're not responsible for the political or economic ideas of any individual. But we are responsible for what goes on the screen. We guard that with great care. If Communists have attempted to inject their propaganda into the motion picture, they have failed miserably., We will never permit them to succeed."

When they thump their chests they are liberals but if any of you mention that you are opposed to the communist party then you are anti-labor, you're anti-semitic, anti-negro and you always end up a fascist but they never start that until they know that you are opposed to the communist party. So if you wanted to drop their roimpers and look you'd find the hammer and sickle on their rear ends." At 42:39 another unidentified man speaks wikth determination and disdain: "II believe that 95% of the people of California are decent and honest American citizens. The Communist party is a minority. The dangerous minority. I believe the entire nation should be alerted to its menace today. I think that Mr/.Vishinsky and Mr. molotov have done the most magnificent job of awakening a great many people. The more information the American people get the more they will realize it they more they will turn against it. It is completely against the American feeling, this Communistic thing. I believe--I would, Iwould move to the state of Texas if it ever came here because I believe that Texans would kill them on sight." (he turns to lean his elbow on desk and takes a long drag of his cigarette as his head tilts up--great arrogance).

DO NOT SELL. Excerpted from a feature length comedy starring BUD ABBOTT and LOU COSTELLO, set in either the New West or New South of the late 1800's. A farming widow and her four boys and their overprotective dog try to con Lou into marriage, but he wants nothing to do with it. Bud and Lou become their prisoners. Features a very funny frog-in-a-bowl-of-soup gag routine. MS of a cock perched on a wood fence, getting ready to crow. Good MS of Bud and Lou and the four boys wearing nighties, all crammed into one bed. Nice MS's of Lou trying to talk to the German Shepherd, the dog trying to bite his face off. MS of the widow making pancakes on an old coal stove. MS's of inept Lou fetching pails of water form an old fashioned water pump.
