Lee Thomas, Administrator, EPA talking to reporter.
Senator George Mitchell (D - Maine), The most reliable indicator of future human behavior, is past human behavior. I don t think Ronald Reagan has a single ounce of commitment to protection of our environment.
Hugh Kaufmann, EPA engineer, This administration really has been in the hip pocket of major polluters in everything they do. There s no question about it. Even though there are good people and certainly Lee Thomas, our administrator, just as Bill Ruckelshaus before him, is a very good man - hearts in the right place, but they have to dance to the White House tune.
John O Connor, National Campaign Against Toxic Hazards, I think the EPA is not seriously looking at the magnitude of the problem we have out there. Toxic waste sites across this country are perhaps our nation s number one hidden health problem. There is public health emergency after public health emergency in community after community across this country. The administration is not recognizing that.
Hugh Kaufmann, EPA engineer, The point is we have thousands of sites to clean up. At the rate we re going, it will take us until the year 3000.
Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D-Texas), I do think that there was substantial mismanagement in the beginning of the administration of this fund and of the objective, in that there wasn t enough enthusiasm in pursuing it. But I think you see a change here at the present time with the new administrator. Anyway, we re going to be monitoring it and pushing it to see that it s accomplished because it s a major priority for our country to clean up these toxic waste sites.
Lee Thomas, Administrator, EPA, And I think 5 years from now, they ll be saying that we ve got the biggest part of this under control and this is how much we ve got left.
